Lunar Eclipse in Israel September 7, 2025

Israel will see a total eclipse of the moon on September 7, 2025. The eclipse begins on Sunday at 19:27 with the moon low in the eastern sky. Totality is at 21:12 and the eclipse ends at 22:56.

Eclipses of the moon always occur when the moon is full and the earth comes between the sun and the moon, causing the Earth's shadow to darken the moon. The September 7 full moon is known as the "Corn moon", its native American name. The next full moon is the Harvest moon, falling this year in October on Erev Succoth. 

When the full eclipse begins the moon often turns red, caused by the refracted light of the sun along the circumference of the earth falling on the darkened moon. The Earth's atmosphere essentially acts as a lens bending sunlight onto the darkened moon. You are essentially seeing all of the sunsets on earth projected onto the moon at the same time. In the Internet era this has come to be called "The Blood Moon", very clickbaitey. And Cool! 

A lunar eclipse is a very bright event (remember the moon is full), except for totality when the moon is completely darkened by the Earth's shadow, and can be seen everywhere and anywhere, even in light polluted skys, in Israel at the same times with your naked eye.  However, any optical aid such as by binoculars or telescope enhances the view, especially during totality. Note however that the eclipse begins with the moon rising low in the Eastern sky, which will require a clear Eastern horizon to view. So you might want to join us in the open desert sky with a star tour starting at 7:30pm on Sunday September 7, just as the eclipse begins.

Partial Solar Eclipse Visible in Israel June 21, 2020

Exciting news for Summer Solstice Day. A partial eclipse of the sun will be visible in Israel on June 21, 2020. The eclipse begins at 7:26am IDT in the morning. Maximum eclipse occurs at 8:24am, when 34% of the sun will be covered by the moon. The eclipse ends at 9:29am IDT.

This is an annular eclipse, which means totality is never reached, as the moon is too far from the earth for it to completely cover the sun. A small annulus or ring of light remains lit when the moon covers the sun. You have to get to Sharm El Sheikh at the southern end of the Sinai Peninsula if you want to see the annular eclipse. 


Partial phases of the eclipse and the annular eclipse are visible in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The eclipse ends before sunrise in the Americas. England is too far north to see it. 

The easiest way to view it is by making a pinhole projector, which is a nice family project.

The Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, occurs just a few short hours before the eclipse begins at 12:43am IDT on June 21, 2020.

Lunar Eclipse in Israel, July 16, 2019 - ECLIPSE PARTY TIME!

A partial lunar eclipse will be visible in Israel the night of Tuesday, July 16. Israel is nearly ideally placed for the timing of the eclipse whose partial phase begins at 11:01PM IDT. Maximum partial eclipse is at 12:30AM July 17, when a little over half the moon will be eclipsed. The partial eclipse ends at 1:59AM on July 17.

The moon orbits the earth, moving from west to east in the sky. As it does so on the night of July 16 it passes through the earth's shadow. A little over half the moon will become covered at mid-eclipse.

Astronomy Israel will be having a lunar eclipse party starting at 10:30PM the night of July 16 with special party pricing of 100nis/adult, 75nis/child between 6-12 years old, no charge under 6.

A lunar eclipse occurs only when the moon is full, so it will be very bright and visible from almost anywhere in Israel. (Unfortunately for the Americas, the eclipse will be over before moon rise there so not visible to enthusiasts there. Come to Israel to see it!!) So, unlike many astronomical events that require a dark sky, you will be able to see it from wherever you are. (Do I have to tell you how to find the moon?) Nevertheless, we are having an eclipse party in Mitzpe Ramon beginning our regular star tour at 10:30PM on July 16 instead of  9:30PM, half an hour before the partial phase begins. We will be able to watch the eclipse through our telescopes and binoculars, point out features on the moon visible only through telescopes, and look for the Apollo 11 landing site, only 4 days before the 50th anniversary of the first manned landing on the moon of July 20, 1969.

This is the last umbral lunar eclipse, where the moon passes through the dark part of the earth's shadow, until May 26, 2021. All of the four lunar eclipses in 2020 are penumbral eclipses, which are hardly visible even as they occur, so be sure to go out and watch it.

The Total Lunar Eclipse of September 28, 2015

Early in the morning of September 28 a total eclipse of the moon will be widely visible around the world. In Israel the moon begins to enter the penumbra of the earth's shadow at 3:11AM IDT, however the darkening of the moon will probably not be visible until the moon enters the umbra of the earth's shadow at 4:07AM IDT. Totality begins at 5:11AM IDT with mid eclipse occurring at 5:47AM IDT, just before sunrise.

This eclipse is notable for a number of reasons. 1) It's the fourth in a series of total lunar eclipses in two years. 2) It occurs when the moon is closest in its orbit to the earth, called the "perigee" of the orbit, and in modern times referred to as a "supermoon", although in reality it will only appear about 15% larger than a regular full moon in the sky. Nevertheless, everyone will marvel at how large it is, although this is not really observable unless you can compare the two moons side-by-side. 3) It is the Harvest Moon, the fulll moon closest to the Autumnal Equinox, used by farmers to extend the time they can see in the dark to conduct their harvest. 4) It is called a "blood moon", turning red from the diffraction of light around the edge of the earth into the shadow on the moon, essentially projecting all of the sunsets and sunrises into the shadow of the earth on the moon. The darkness of the eclipse and the reddening of the moon vary widely from eclipse to eclipse, depending on weather conditions on our planet and how central the eclipse is, i.e. how deep into the shadow of the earth the moon goes. Finally for Jews, this full moon occurs on the first night of Succot, no coincidence since the beginning of Succot always falls out on the 15th of Tishrei, the night of the full moon, as does Pesach in the month of Nissan.  A lunar eclipse can only happen when the moon is full and opposite the sun in the sky. Some have made alot of this "blood moon" hearkening back to the Prophet Joel (2:31) "The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD." I will let those better equipped to deal with Astrology deal with that one.

Since this eclipse occurs during the first day of Succot I will not be doing an early morning star tour but will merely be enjoying it personally. Star tours will continue normally during Chol Hamoed.

Solar Eclipse Visible from Israel on Friday, March 20

An eclipse of the sun will be visible across Israel on Friday March 20, coinciding with the first day of Spring, or the Vernal Equinox as astronomers call it. The eclipse will just be partial in Israel, with just 5% of the sun's disk being obscured by the moon. The eclipse will not be visible at all in the US.

The eclipse begins in Israel at 11:17am local time and ends at 12:39pm local time. Maximum eclipse occurs at 11:58am, when just a tiny sliver of the sun, just 5% will be covered by the moon.

Be careful observing the sun. You always need special filters to view the sun with optical aid. They cannot be home made. Observing the sun without proper eye protection with binoculars or a telescope wil result in immediate and permanent damage to your eyes. The same is true if you stare at the sun with your naked eye. Don't do that. You can make a home made pinhole projector to observe the sun, or else use a #14 welders glass, no other value. But the welders glass, if you have one, should only be used with the naked eye, not in front of optics.

Photos from the Solar Eclipse of November 3, 2013

We went up to the roof of the physics building at Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva where a public viewing session was being held. Here a group of students uses eclipse glasses and a small Meade telescope to view the eclipse.

Partial Solar Eclipse Visible from Israel on November 3

A partial eclipse of the sun will be visible from Israel on Sunday, November 3, 2013. The moon will cover approximately 20% of the sun from Israel, with maximum eclipse reached at 4:00PM. The sun will be very low to the horizon then, just 8 degrees high in the sky and very close to sunset. So, you will need a very clear horizon to observe it. Viewers on the coast will have the best chance gazing out over the Mediterranean Sea. Do not use binoculars or telescopes unless you have special solar filters for them. Naked eye observers should be able to view the partially eclipsed sun just as they would a setting sun, but don't gaze for long unless you have a special naked-eye solar filter. Also be careful not to stare at the sun when it is higher in the sky as this could permanently damage your eyesight.

How the sun will look when viewed from Israel at 4:00PM on Sunday November 3, 2013. This will be maximum eclipse with the sun 20% covered by the moon. This will also be just 30 minutes before sunset, so the sun will be very close to the horizon. The partial eclipse begins at 3:13 when you will definitely need a solar filter to safely watch the sun.
The partial eclipse will also be visible along the east coast of the US, with maximum coverage at 9:00am. The sun will then be high enough to require a solar filter to observe.

Shabbat Eclipse - Saturday evening

Next Friday night Saturday night, December 10, the full moon will rise fully eclipsed at 4:37PM as we walk home from shul (beit keneset) after the end of Shabbat. This event will begin low in the east, so it is best to seek out a clear eastern horizon. Totality will end at 5:00PM. The partial phase ends at 6:18PM. Since it will be immediately after Shabbat we won't be doing any sky tours, but watching privately from the edge of the Machtesh. Enjoy it wherever you may be. And Shabbat Shalom!

A Most Excellent Total Lunar Eclipse, June 15, 2011

A most excellent total eclipse of the moon will be visible in its entirety from Israel on the night of June 15, 2011 and early in the morning of June 16. It is well seen from most of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, but especially well seen from Israel. This is the first lunar eclipse in 2011.

The moon will rise a few hours from full at 8:04PM IDT on the night of Wednesday, June 15. Just 20 minutes later the penumbral phase of the eclipse begins, when the moon enters the penumbral shadow of the earth. This phase is actually difficult to see, since there is only a slight darkening to the moon until the partial phase begins at 9:22PM IDT. As this phase begins, the moon enters the umbral shadow of the earth, and observers should start to see a "notch" where the moon pases into the complete shadow of the earth. Totality begins at 10:22PM when all of the moon enters the earth's full, umbral shadow. At 11:12PM the moon will be as deeply into the earth's shadow as it will get at this eclipse and "greatest eclipse" begins, when the moon should reach its darkest. Totality ends just after midnight on Thursday, June 16, and the exit partial phase of the eclipse ends at 1:02AM IDT.

The circumstances of this total eclipse have the moon passing almost centrally through the earth's shadow, which should make this a very dark eclipse. You can estimate the darkness yourself using the Danjon Scale. Volcanic aerosals can affect the color and brightness of an eclipse, and since one of the Icelandic volcanoes just belched a large dust cloud into the atmosphere, this could be a very interesting eclipse indeed. The eclipse is well viewed by the naked eye, although any optical aid at all, from binoculars to even a small telescope, will show greater detail. A lunar eclipse, unlike a solar eclipse, can be viewed without any protection for your eyes. The moon is never bright enough to damage your vision, even through a large telescope. If you are going to watch the early stages of the eclipse, make sure to find a clear eastern horizon, since the moon will be low in the sky as the penumbral stage begins.

Starting the New Year with a Solar Eclipse in Israel

More good news for sky watchers. Start off the New Year with a partial solar eclipse that is well seen from Israel on Tuesday, January 4, 2011. This is not a total eclipse anywhere, but sky watchers in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia will be able to see it well. The greatest extent of coverage will be in Stockholm, Sweden, where 79% of the sun will be covered at 9:42am local time.

In Israel the eclipse will begin at 9:09am, with maximum coverage of 47% reached at 10:41am local time. If you are without clouds, look carefully and you may be able to see a "dulling" of the sunshine around mid-eclipse, but the sun is so bright that only a total eclipse darkens the sky. Sometimes a perceptible drop in temperature can be felt around mid-eclipse as well.

I must caution you not to look directly at the sun with the naked eye, even during a partial eclipse, and certainly never with any optical instrument, unless it has been designated for solar use. More than a glance at the sun can cause permanent damage to eyesight. This includes smoked glass, exposed negatives or any other home made item, however dark. Also, sunglasses, however dark, are not safe for solar viewing. They can still allow harmful rays to reach the eye. Welders #14 glass can be used to view the eclipse with the naked eye or this projection system that you can make at home. You will be tempted to keep trying to watch the sun with your naked eye. Don't do that. Children's eyes are particularly susceptible to injury. There are special astronomical sun filters and films that can be used. You may find them for sale in various places, including camera shops.

Visibility of Partial Solar Eclipse, Tuesday, January 4, 2011

This eclipse allows us to directly view the "molad", the birth of the new moon of Shevat, but Rosh Chodesh, the first of the new month, will not occur until Thursday. This is because ordinarily the new moon of a month would not be visible until 12-24 hours after its astronomical occurrence, which is the earliest witnesses could report it to the Bet Din. Rosh Chodesh in the Jewish calendar is an observable event, not one calculated by celestial mechanics.

Barekat Observatory in Israel will webcast the event for those not able to get outside.

Watching the Total Lunar Eclipse of December 21, 2010 from Israel

Although this eclipse is not visible from Israel, it can be watched online from a large number of sites contributed by individuals and NASA. And the good news is that the eclipse is at a much more reasonable hour in Israel than in the US, starting at 8:33AM on Tuesday morning and ending at 12:01 PM. Below are links to the sites that will be webcasting real time video of the eclipse. With much of the US covered by clouds your best bets are stations on the Atlantic coast and the south.

Save the Date - August 21, 2017

On August 21, 2017, North America will experience a total eclipse of the sun whose central line will begin in the northwest, pass through the heartland and end near Florida. If you wanted to design a path of totality that would allow the greatest number of Americans to view a total solar eclipse, you could hardly have done better! Below is a map of the path of the eclipse. It looks like most of North America will be within a relatively short drive of the path of totality. Save the date. It should be an extraordinary event!
